VERBOORT -- A funeral mass was Monday morning for Henry Antone "Hank" VanGunsven, 87, Verboort.

Mr. VanGrunsven died July 2, 2003, at Tuality Community Hospital in Hillsboro.

Monday's mass was at Visitation Catholic Church with Father Scott Vandehey as celebrant.

Interment followed in Visitation Cemetery and a reception followed in the Harris Parish Center.

Recitation of the rosary preceded the mass.

Mr. VanGrunsven was born Oct. 6, 1915, near Verboort, a quarter mile from the house where he spent all but four years of his life. He was a son of Antone and Anna Cosmans VanGrunsven and attended Verboort Grade School.

On April 11, 1940, he married Genevieve Josephine Seus in Hillsboro. They lived in Cornelius until 1943, when they moved to Verboort.

Mrs. VanGrunsven died March 1, 1994, in Verboort, after nearly 54 years of marriage.

Following his marriage, Mr. VanGrunsven worked at Bird's Eye Cannery in Hillsboro for two years and then began farming full time. He raised row crops, including beans and strawberries.

After retiring from farming, he went to work for Van Dyke Seed Company in Forest Grove, where he worked until retiring due to health problems.

Although he didn't continue his education past the eighth grade, he played baseball for Verboort High School while working for Ray Maling Cannery in Hillsboro.

He also played baseball for and coached numerous local teams, including the Ray Maling, Verboort and Banks teams.

Mr. VanGrunsven later became an avid golfer and helped design the Sunset Grove Golf Course and managed it for three years before helping design Killarney West Golf Course.

Every year, Mr. VanGrunsven raised a large garden and shared the fruits and vegetables with family, friends and neighbors.

Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law, Ron and Anita VanGrunsven, Fruitdale, Idaho, Jim and Willy VanGrunsven, Molalla, and Ken and Renita VanGrunsven and Tom and Sheila VanGrunsven, all of Forest Grove; six daughters and their husbands, Betty Vandecoevering, Linda and Jim Spiering, and Pat Soto, all of Forest Grove, Joanne and Ken Vandehey, Cornelius, Mary and Jerry Morse, Aloha, and Barb and Bob Jansen, Hillsboro; 17 grandchildren; a brother, Tony VanGrunsven, Hillsboro; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Christine Giesbers, Anne Desinger and Delia Burns; and a brother, Bernard VanGrunsven.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Visitation Cemetery Endowment Fund, 4285 NW Visitation Road, Forest Grove, OR 97116.

Fuiten, Rose and Hoyt Funeral Home of Forest Grove was in charge of arrangements.
