Carl Eldred Jones passed away peacefully at home on October 7, 2021 after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 73.

He was born in Havre de Grace, Maryland and grew up near Baltimore, spending much of his time enjoying life with his friends and family along the Chesapeake Bay.

He joined the army after high school and was stationed in Europe during his three years of service. He received four metals for his exemplary service.

By the time he left the army, he had developed a love for the ocean and was an avid scuba diver. He moved to Pensacola, Florida to earn a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of West Florida in Marine Biology. During his time there he traveled the world diving, instructed dive classes and made many close friends. He moved to Galveston after graduation to work for National Marine Fisheries. In 1978, he began his long career in the laboratories and pilot units of Exxon working on research and quality control issues. During a downturn, he earned a teaching degree and taught 11th grade Biology. He soon realized that he much preferred the organized and methodical laboratory environment and went back to work at Exxon at the first opportunity.

Not long after moving to the Island, Carl met Elvia, the love of his life. They were soon married and began their life together. They made their home in Baytown and raised their son, Walter. Carl was a dedicated husband and father who enjoyed travelling and being with his family.

One of their favorite things to do was to spend time on their sailboat. They spent many hours enjoying Galveston Bay, the Gulf and even the marina. Carl, Walter and his dear friends raced in several regattas, always placing in their division. Besides sailing, he enjoyed hunting with John Carrell and their friends.

Carl is survived by his wife, Elvia; their son, Walter; Brother-in-law Mark Villareal; cousin Garner Jones; his nieces and nephews of the Ashton Family.

A visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 pm on Monday, October 18, 2021 at the Navarre Funeral Home in Baytown, TX. A graveside service will be held at 1:30 pm on Tuesday, October 19, 2021 at the Houston National Cemetery. The family is requesting that in lieu of flowers donations be made to Wounded Warriors.
