Thomas Leo Porter Sr., age 80 of Lebanon, passed away Friday, October 08, 2021 at his residence. He was born April 08, 1941 in Lebanon.
Leo was a graduate of St. Augustine High School class of 1960. During this time, he gained the nickname "Flash" when playing basketball and broke all existing records with his rebounding exploit. Leo was also a part of the US Marine Corp in the year of 1961- 1965 following the Reserves from 1965-1967. His Awards and recognitions were M-14 Rifle Marksman Badge and Good Conduct Medal- 1st Award. He completed training in Rocket Launcher & Flame Thrower.
He coached 15 years with Christ The King Boys Basketball, 4th-6th grade and won 2 championships. Leo played baseball with the Lebanon Giants for 3 years. He made history with that being the 1st baseball team that was integrated in Lebanon, KY. He continued to play softball until he retired.
He had a basketball scholarship with Kentucky State University and continued his education at UofL and JCC. He was most known for being a self-taught carpenter, electrician and helping everyone in the community with his many skills. He was known as a Jack of All Trades. He worked at GE for 25yrs and was a member of the Knights of Peter Claver Court. He was a big UofL Cardinal Fan of all their sports, and he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He touched many with his jokes, laughter and kind heart. He was truly loved.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Dennis (Dee) Porter, and Mary Frances Osborne Porter.
He is survived by the mother of his children, Doris Sickles Porter; sons, Thomas Leo Porter Jr. (Bertina), Kenneth Doran Porter, and Courtney Kareem Porter; daughter, Benita Carol Porter Freeman (Brian); brothers, James Robert (Wife Ruth Precedded in death), and Charles Williams (Rose) of Akron, Ohio; sisters, Ann Crenshaw of Antioch, and Loueva Moss (Husband Arthur proceeded in death) of Louisville, KY; grandchildren, E'Dena, Ahmad, Brook, Isaiah, Jasmine, Cordelia, Tera, and Daytron; 5 great-great-grandchildren, E'Lias, E'Lijah, Kentani, Arnold Jr., and August; and Geneva Williams Friend & Partner and a host of family and friends he loved.
Pallbearers will be Brian Keith Buckler Sr., Joseph Herdon, Andre Staples, Timothy Washington, Ebon Wright, and James Wright Sr.
Honorary pallbearers will be, John Body, A.J. Cunningham, Pinnell Gradnigo, Emmett Mckay, David Porter, Rodney Porter, Dennis Porter, and Lamont Porter.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, October 18, 2021 at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Lebanon National Cemetery with full military honors.
