It is with our deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of our matriarch, Rita Jane Hogan. Rita passed away on September 10, 2021 at the age of 73 following the very recent death of her beloved husband and best friend of 53 years, Bernard M. Hogan Sr.

Rita lived a life of courage and resilience as she faced ongoing health challenges while never complaining of the pain or the difficulty she was having. She was a woman of stature, a pillar of strength and a natural leader. She was much like a hard candy with a soft gooey center. If you knew her well, it's because she let you in. She was known in her community as a giver and a person who created opportunities for others. She loved the people she helped. She loved her family and her friends. She had a tremendous pride in her sons and her grandchildren.

Rita often found joy in life's simple pleasures; bird feeders, orchids, a cup of hot tea, a pecan sandy, and some company on her back deck by the river. She never failed to seize the day. As her grandchildren came along, she enjoyed letting them run through the house, clacking plastic pots and even had a cabinet built just so they could play in it.

She loved football and enjoyed family gatherings to watch the games. There was always pizza! She was a Buccaneer fan through and through, right from her own living room - win or lose.

Rita was well traveled with her husband and had been places that some only dream of. She wasn't merely a spectator in her travels; she joined in. There was zip lining and tubing, excursions and so much 'living' in her years. It goes without saying but she was tough and determined. Even in her final days she was planning a trip to see her family in Vermont. She wanted to document the memories of her life. She wanted to leave a legacy and she wanted to share what mattered. That's who she was; an adventurer, a traveler, a giver, a friend, a grandma, a mom, a fan, a person who celebrated the small things in every day life.

Born in Saint Albans, Vermont, January 4, 1948, Rita is survived by her three sons; Bernard 'Mickey' Hogan Jr., Jeffrey Hogan and Christopher Hogan, along with 8 grandchildren and their mothers. Rita is preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Michael Hogan Sr., her parents; Shirlie and John Varriale, her sister, Linda Grenzebach, her brother, Michael Varriale and her granddaughter, Kirstin Marie Hogan.

Her legacy and the stories of her life will live on in the hearts of her family, friends and community that she helped build. Words cant express the tremendous loss our family is feeling and that's a testament to how large a person's impact is - we grieve to the extent that we love and we really, really loved Rita. Please join us as we gather together in honor and in memory of Rita on September 23, 2021.
