He was the second born of six children. He accepted Christ at an early age, and made a conscious decision about God and joined Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Cypress, Florida. While living in Los Angeles, he attended West Los Angeles Church of God in Christ under the leadership of Bishop Charles Baker, Pastor.
Lewis was educated in Jackson County, Florida. He made the decision to join the United States Marines at the age of 22. Lewis was a proud marine he excelled to become a Master Sergeant, during his time in Military Lewis was awarded a Bronze medal and Purple Heart for his heroic acts. Lewis retired after 23 years of service, upon retirement he decided to pursue a career with the Veteran's Administration as a counselor to assist other Veterans with their benefits for over 25 years.
At the age of 50, Lewis graduated from Cal State Los Angeles, with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Lewis had the distinction of being a part of the first Black Battalion in the marine brotherhood called the Montford Point Marines, he was also a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Lewis was united in marriage to Cora Mae Johnson on January 5, 1959, in Dothan Alabama and to this union a daughter and two sons were born Debbie Brown Munnings, Shelton Brown and Curtis Brown. Cora also welcomed five bonus children, Sandra Clayton, Lewis Brown Jr, Jeanette Reeves, Deborah Ann Brown and Reginia Gail White.
Preceding Lewis in death in addition to his parents: his wife Cora Mae Brown, son Lewis Brown Jr, daughter Deborah Ann Brown, sister Lucille Franklin and brother, George Brown.
Lewis leaves to cherish his memories daughters, Sandra Clayton (James), Jeanette Reeves (Lenward), Debbie Munnings and Regenia Gail White. Sons, Shelton Brown (Denise), Curtis Brown, God-daughter Latasha Lindsey and 18 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren and 1 grand god dog "Charles Lewis Brown." As well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
