1850 census of Milwaukee WI with his parents and sister, Julia. 1860 census of Waukesha WI with his widowed mother, sister Julia, and brother Erastus (Erastus David Holton Webb). Possibly enlisted in 1863 from Wisconsin. Not found in the 1870 census. Married Martha/Mattie M Wilson on 1 June 1874 in Grant county, Wisconsin. Listed as a sewing machine agent in the 1880 census of Louisville, Kentucky with 1st wife and daughter, Julianette Claudine Webb, who was born 1879 in Charlottesville, Virginia. Mattie died about 1890, location unknown, according to posted family tree files. A Lompoc newspaper reported on 27 June 1891 that Rev. J C Webb and his daughter (wife not mentioned, presumed deceased) were visiting his mother, Mrs. Peck, and brother Holton. John married Bertha Louise Lyman, of Marshalltown, Iowa on 2 April 1892 in La Puente, Los Angeles county, California. Son Leroy Boughton Webb was born the following year in Lompoc, Santa Barbara county, California. Listed as a widowed clerk in the 1900 census of Los Angeles. On 31 July 1900 John was assigned by the YMCA to the Philippines, where he was also mentioned as secretary to the Army. The 1901 Canada census of British Columbia lists his wife and son in the home of Donald G. Munro as Bertha and Laroi Munro (dates of birth given match). Bertha returned to the US, marrying Donald G. Munro in Tacoma, Washington on 22 October 1902. John C. Webb vs. Bertha L. Webb was filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court on 14 November 1902. Bertha reported missing from Alameda CA by Donald G. Munro on 18 October 1906, stating she had disappeared with an adopted baby on 10 March 1906. John C Webb may have been the Los Angeles County Humane officer who was fired after attempting to secure a light sentence for a teenaged boy who severely beat his 9 year old sister who had lost 15 cents (or spent it on candy) due to "extenuating circumstances" in 1905. Informant on his death certificate was his daughter, Mrs. Juliannette W Browne. Occupation given as clergyman, cause of death was a stroke of 10 days duration. Parents correctly listed as Eldridge Webb and Ann Boughton on the death certificate.
