Mary was a daughter of Andreas "Andrew" Oblander (1818-1883) and Catherine Schmidt (1818-1870). She was born on January 7, 1849, in Pennsylvania, a year and a half after her parents and older siblings emigrated from Germany (July 1847). The Oblander family moved to Woolwich Township, Canada West (Ontario), in 1856. The 1861 census shows that they lived in a log house and that a log meeting house on their property belonged to the German Baptist congregation.
Mary married George Mogk. The couple lived in northern Woolwich Township, where they had nine known children:
