Lois Maxine (Colby) Nelson was the second child of Rollo and Ella (Hanson) Colby. She was born on February 15, 1926, in Gwinner, ND. She received her schooling in Dunbar Township.
On November 10, 1944, Lois was united in marriage to Ralph Nelson of Rutland Township. They farmed in the Milnor and Rutland area until 1953 when they managed the Rutland Co-op Creamery. In December 1962, they purchased the Rutland Cafe which they operated until retiring in December of 1998.
Lois was a member of Nordland Lutheran Church where she had served as president of the Ladies Aid, taught Sunday School, attended Bible Study, and served on the church council.
Lois was known for her baking, especially her cookies and date bars. She was especially proud to called a wife, a mother, a grandma, and a great grandma.
In May, 2019, Lois entered Four Seasons Healthcare Center in Forman and resided there until her death. She thrived at Four Seasons and was blessed with exceptional care. She was treated with respect, dignity, and love.
Lois Nelson passed away Thursday, October 7, 2021 at Four Seasons Healthcare Center in Forman, ND, under the care of CHI Hospice. She was 95 years old.
Lois is survived by her three children: Ed (JoDee) of Crookston, MN; Dick (Bernadette) of Valley City, ND: and Barb (Bob) Rick of Fergus Falls, MN. Eight grandchildren: Cody (Anja) Nelson of Oslo, Norway; Darren (Andrea) Nelson of Valley City, ND; Bridget (Matt) Orner of West Fargo, ND; Luke Nelson of Valley City, ND; Patrick (Mindy) Nelson, Potomac Falls, VA; Liz (Jerry Ryerson) Nelson of Valley City, ND; Tara (Jose Debes) Rick of St. Paul, MN; and Justin (Mallory) Rick of Carver, MN. Eight great-grandchildren: Reid and Rayne Nelson; Matthew Hammerschmidt, Avery, Cooper and Gunner Orner; and Maddie and Elliot Rick. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Gerald (Nellie) Nelson of Fargo, ND; and several nieces and nephews and their families.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years; her parents; her brothers Don, Roger, and Richard Colby; her sisters Betty Nelson, Audrey Johnson, and Shirley Dahl.
Instead of flowers, memorials are preferred to Four Seasons Healthcare, Forman, ND; Nordland Lutheran Church, Rutland, ND; Rutland Cemetery, Rutland, ND; and CHI Hospice, Valley City, ND, who took exceptional care of Mom for six months.
