James M. Hampton, 87, of Galesburg, died in his home at 5:53 AM on Friday, October 8, 2021.

James was born on November 9, 1933, to Marion and Olga (Schwarz) Hampton in Galesburg, where he was born and raised. It's also where he met and married the love of his life Miriam (Wallick) Hampton, she survives.

James is survived by his wife: Miriam Hampton, his niece: Betty (Bill) Wenzel, his great-nieces, and nephews: Natalie (Brian) Smith, and Steven (Loni) Wenzel, and three great-great-nieces along with two great-great nephews. He is preceded in death by his siblings: Bill Hampton, Gary Hampton, and Betty Roate.

James graduated high school in 1952, immediately joining the United States Navy. He was honorably discharged after his service and took on the duty of taking care of his mother after the passing of his father. He later returned to school, graduating from Western Illinois University in 1982. He had also worked at Maytag for 40 years, retiring in 1991.

James was a sports fanatic, often knowing more about other people's teams before even the truest fans. However, he was a tried and true St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Bears fan. Around the house, he always had a sporting event of any kind playing.

A visitation will be held from 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM Thursday, October 14, 2021, with a service to follow at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. A private family graveside service will be held at East Linwood Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Knox County Humane Society. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services are honored to be serving the family. Online condolences may be made to www.h-p-w.com
