He studied at Saint John's Seminary in Brighton, MA from which he was ordained to the priesthood by Richard Cardinal Cushing on February 2, 1962. Later in life he earned his master's degree from Loyola University in Chicago in religious education. He served on several Arch Diocesan Committees.
