Native American Seminole leader Osceola was born in 1804, near the Chattahoochee River. His father was a British trader and his mother the daughter of a Creek chief. Grew up in northern Florida, where he became a Seminole leader. War chief of the 1835 Seminole War. Captured two years later under a flag of truce. Imprisoned in Fort Moultrie, South Carolina, where he died in 1838 after refusing the white man's medicine for a throat infection. Buried near the entrance of Fort Moultrie, Charleston, South Carolina.
