"Timothy K. Kelly, age 72 of Murphy, NC, formerly of Longmont, CO, passed away Saturday, October 2, 2021 in Murphy.

Tim was a caring and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He and his wife, Mary, built a home and family, predominantly in Boulder County, CO. Since 2019, Tim and Mary have resided in Murphy, customizing their new home to suit their most recent phase in life: retirement. He remained connected with friends and family throughout the country via technology, and was very willing to travel and visit. He was very proud of all his children's accomplishments and wished them only happiness on their chosen paths in life.

Tim was a man of many talents and interests. He was raised in Norwood, OH, attended University of Cincinnati as a co-op student, and became an aerospace engineer. He worked for NASA and contractors, assigned to many high-profile projects, including the Space Shuttle, Space Lab, Hubble Space Telescope, SIRTF and Kepler missions. He spent the bulk of his career working for Ball Aerospace in Boulder, CO. He ended his career at Ball after 32 years as Director of Program Management. More recently, he affiliated with Cornell Technical Services, serving on NASA review panels. Tim and his brothers founded K&K Associates, a partnership that developed and issued thermal analysis software.

Throughout his life, Tim was an avid outdoorsman. During his college years, he explored caves and repelled cliffsides, experimented with SCUBA, and made several parachute jumps. Later recreation included family camping trips, hiking, and target shooting. In his retirement, Tim established a woodworking shop that borders on the professional. From his shop, he designed and built many products, from home improvements to gifts for the grandchildren. He was well read – Tim maintained a large and diverse library, and it was rare to see him without reading material at hand. From an early age, Tim especially appreciated the science fiction genre. Tim and Mary traveled together around the USA, and to destinations in Europe and Japan. Tim had a particular fondness for road trips. When he needed a less active pursuit, he had a passion for researching his family history.

He was predeceased by his parents, Charles P. Kelly and Alberta L. Emnett Kelly, and a brother-in-law, Robert Sorrell.

Surviving Mr. Kelly are his wife of over 29 years, Mary V. Kelly of Murphy; four daughters Sarah M. Chambers (Jesse) of Joshua, TX, Colleen R. Johnson (Dain) of Windsor, CO, Emily A. Zalewski (Dan) of Lyons, CO and Karen T. Kelly of Loveland, CO; four sons Kevin P. Kelly (Keri) of Ft. Collins, CO, Christopher C. Kelly of Virginia Beach, VA, Daniel Miles (Molly) of La Mesa, CA, and Jason S. Kelly of Japan; five sisters, Kathleen Steuer (James) of Greenwood, IN, Kristina Condit (Tom) of Cincinnati, OH, Patricia Sorrell of Norwood, OH, Carolyn Peddicord (Dave) of Norwood, OH and Margaret Walker (Bob) of Norwood OH; three brothers, Michael Kelly (Jacque) of Jefferson, OH, Eric Kelly (Diana) of Westminster, CO and Kenneth (Kim) Kelly of Richmond, TX; eight grandchildren, Rose Johnson, Aaron Johnson, Matthew Johnson, Hazel Kelly, Sylvan Kelly, Alice Chambers, Ethan Chambers and James Miles; and one great-grandson, Jordan Johnson. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews for whom he had great affection and regard.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 8 at 1 p.m. at the Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy, NC. The family will receive friends and extended family beginning at 12:15 p.m. A recital of the Rosary will be made at 12:30 pm. The Reverend Dr. Maggie Roark will be officiating.

Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy, is in charge of all arrangements."
