Joe was born in Chicago, IL to parents Joseph and Elisabeth on April 28, 1931 in the midst of the Great Depression. He was the third of four children, sibling to two older brothers John and Robert and younger sister Marie. He attended grade school at St. Margaret's of Scotland and high school at St. Ignatius graduating with the class of 1949.
A year after graduation the Korean War began and Joe enlisted in the United States Air Force shortly thereafter. He served as a radar avionics technician in the 317th Fighter Interceptor Squadron and deployed for one year to Thule Air Base high up in the Arctic of Greenland.
After an honorable discharge in 1954, Joe attended the Chicago Teachers College (now Chicago State University) graduating with a degree in education. After a short time teaching and coaching football in the Archdiocese of Chicago schools, Joe was hired by the Safeco Insurance company in 1960.
About that time he met the former Regina Cogger (Colette) and they were married on July 21, 1961. After a 16 year tenure with Safeco as a property and casualty claims adjuster, Joe was hired by the Prudential Insurance Company in 1976. Eventually Joe was transferred to their Holmdel, NJ office in 1983 and settled a household in Toms River with Colette. Joe retired from Prudential in 1997 after a 37 year career in the Property and Casualty Insurance business. He continued working for a number of years as an independent consultant finally retiring for good shortly after the 9-11 terrorist attacks. After 42 years of marriage, Joe's wife Colette passed away in November of 2003.
Joe is survived by his Sons Joseph of Coronado, California and Patrick (Meredith) of Toms River NJ as well as five grandchildren; Sean Cook of San Diego, CA, Lindsey Cook of Los Angeles, CA, Kyle Cook of Coronado, CA, Sean of Toms River, NJ and Madison of Toms River, NJ. Joe was pre-deceased by his wife Colette as well as his infant daughter Jeanine.
A service was held for close family and friends at the Anderson and Campbell Funeral home on March 24th. An interment at the Brig. General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery and celebration of life is planned for later this Summer.
