James "Jim" Alfred Melton, Jr. (77) of Wichita Falls, Texas was born on July 23, 1944, in Jefferson City, Missouri to James Alfred and Betty Lou (Campbell) Melton and died peacefully in his home on October 3, 2021, after a two-year battle with cancer.
Jim spent his early years in Jefferson City as a spunky child who was always into mischief of some sort. During his senior year of high school his family moved to Denison, Texas, which he was none too pleased about, but he was pleasantly surprised to find that the streets were not actually made of dirt and there were no horses tied to hitching posts, as he had envisioned. Jim quickly made friends, as was always the case, and promptly grew to love Texas and called it his home from that point forward.
Jim graduated from Denison High School in 1964, attended the University of North Texas and then Grayson County College, earning an Associates of Business Administration before being drafted into the U.S. Army in 1967 during the Vietnam war. He served 2 years on active duty, earning many commendations, and 4 years on military standby duty before being honorably discharged in 1972 (PF5).
Jim moved his family to Wichita Falls in 1972, where his two beautiful daughters, Susan and Ashley, were raised for many years. He was the manager of the Ethan Allen Carriage House furniture store for several years before starting his lifelong career in pharmaceutical sales, first with Hoechst-Roussel Pharmaceuticals, and later Schering-Plough. Jim excelled in his profession earning many awards and accolades from management, and commendations from his peers. He loved his job and was a natural at presenting information in a manner that was respected (often with a joke or two!). After retiring from pharmaceuticals, he became a physician's liaison for Hospice of Wichita Falls for 10 years before fully retiring in 2012.
Jim was honored by the Wichita Falls Family Practice Residency Program for his support over the years. He also supported Habitat for Humanity, several One Arm Dove Hunts, and numerous other non-profit organizations. Jim was a former director for the Northwest Texas Field and Stream Association where he enjoyed working with the Youth Deer Hunt program.
In the 1980's Jim met and married the love of his life, Barbara White (aka "Barb" or "Barbie"), who loved and cherished him for over 40 years. Together they loved dancing and socializing with friends and family. They enjoyed escaping to the mountains, especially Red River, New Mexico, Jim's favorite place. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying fishing, hunting, and off-roading.
Jim was our sunshine, our humor, our strongest supporter and our superhero. He never knew a stranger and was quick to act when he knew someone was in need. He was passionate about everything he did and was loved by everyone he knew. Jim was a warrior for his family and those he held close. He loved to make a difference and taught us all to laugh often. He will be missed!
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, James A. Melton and Betty Lou (Melton) Adkins, and his grandparents, Charles O. and Mary C. Melton, and Dennis W. Campbell and Hallie (Campbell) Stout.
Jim leaves behind his loving wife, Barb Melton; daughters Susan (Melton)(Parker) Dornak and husband Steven of Katy, TX, Ashley (Melton) Morrison and husband Ross of Houston, TX; sisters Marilyn (Melton) Larimore and husband Richard of Jefferson City, MO, and Carol (Melton) Whitehead and husband Steve of Wichita Falls, TX; brothers Dennis Melton of Wichita Falls, TX, and Jerry Melton of Sherman, TX; grandsons Brett and Dylan Parker, and Bennett and Griffin Morrison; brothers- and sisters-in-law Beth (White) Doyle and husband Barcley, Thomas White M.D. and wife Maria, Nancy White and Mike Proctor, Theresa White and Jan Archer; numerous nieces and nephews, as well as the mother of his children, Cecelia Hausler and husband Bob, and many dear friends who considered him family.
Visitation and Services will be held at Lunn's Funeral Home, 2812 Midwestern Parkway, Wichita Falls, TX. Visitation will be Friday, October 15th from 5:00pm – 7:00pm, and a Memorial Services will be held Saturday, October 16th starting at 11:00am.
