His Military History

Funeral services for Robert Lyle Cunningham of Granite, who died Sunday as the result of injuries received in an automobile accident Saturday night, were held Tuesday afternoon in the Church of Christ at Cheyenne with Evangelist Grover R. Davis of Granite officiating.

Cunningham, a former resident of Cheyenne and a veteran of World War II where he was held prisoner of the Germans for 16 months, was traveling on highway 283 south of Sayre when he apparently lost control of his car, causing it to run off the shoulder and then skidded back onto the pavement where it turned over. The other occupant of the car, Thomas Ledbetter, also of Granite, received body lacerations.

Cunningham was born July 30, 1922 at Durham, and attended school at Cheyenne and Granite. He graduated from high school at Granite in 1941 and joined the army soon after. He served in the European theatre of operations and was taken captive in Italy and was held prisoner by the Germans for 16 months.

He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.B. Cunningham of Granite; two brothers, Basil, Granite, and Frankie of the home address; five sisters, Vina Dee of the home address; Mrs. Ophelia Hopkins of Dumas, Texas; Mrs. J.M. Price of Canadian, Texas; and Mrs. Josephine Mayrhofen of Granite.

The American Legion post of Cheyenne was in charge of military services held in the Cheyenne Cemetery and the arrangements were by Scroggins Funeral Home.
