Catherine Anderson Merritt Lewis affectionately known as "Kitty" was born on Friday, December 15, 1933, in Marengo County Alabama to Levi Anderson, Sr and Ellen Black Anderson. Catherine was the second born of three children. She began her early education in 1938 in the Birmingham, Alabama Public School system. Catherine accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized in 1943 at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of her uncle the late Rev. Rueben Anderson.

The family relocated to Indianapolis, Indiana in the late 1940's. Catherine completed her High School education with the Indianapolis Public School System graduating from Crispus Attucks High School. Catherine joined Bethany Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. C.A. Hunt.

Catherine was united in Holy Matrimony to Clarence Webster Merritt Sr. in 1953. She later married Jimmy Lewis in 1972.

Catherine began working at St. Francis Hospital in Beech Grove, Indiana in 1956. She was a dedicated and loyal employee, retiring in 1992 after 36 years of service.

Catherine was an active member of the Tillman H. Harpole American Legion Post 249, where she served in many positions until moving to Cleveland Mississippi in 2012. Catherine was also a long-time member of the Daughter of Elks Halycon Temple 127 Indianapolis, Indiana chapter.

Catherine was a lover of life with an infectious personality a witty charm to match and a lovely smile. Catherine had a heart of service and was willing to help anyone. She was a shining light in this world, and she will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to know her. Her love for life was evident in the way she lived.

Catherine departed this life on Wednesday, September 29, 2021, at 12:30 p.m. Catherine's health began to fail in June 2021 but with her faith she looked up to the Lord for strength. She received untiring devoted attention from her daughter and son-in-law, who were dedicated to her comfort and needs.

Catherine was preceded in death by her parents, her spouse Jimmy Lewis, brother Levi Anderson, Jr and her two sons Clarence Webster Merritt Jr, and Edward Lee Merritt.

Catherine leaves to cherish the warmth of her presence, her Daughter T. Denise Brooks, son-in-law Pastor Sammy L. Brooks (Cleveland, MS), one brother Robert Anderson (Patricia) Detroit, MI, grandson Samuel L Brooks (Las Vegas, NV) and granddaughter Jessica M. Brooks, great-grandson Brandon M. Barnett, cousin Sally Henson along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
