Joseph A. "Joe" James, 73, of Machesney Park passed away on Tuesday, October 5, 2021.

Born March 28, 1948 in Machesney Park, the son of Henry and Betty J. (Lorenzen) James. Graduated from Harlem High School, Class of 1966. Veteran of the Vietnam Conflict, serving as a commander in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1970. He received a Purple Heart, Silver Star, and several other medals. Employed by W.A. Whitney for twenty-nine years.

Married Deborah A. "Debbie" Schneider on September 12, 1970 in Loves Park. Member of North Park Fire Department for forty years, where he started as a Jr. Fireman at the age of eleven and worked up to Deputy Chief and then served as a Trustee. Also, member of Winnebago County 911 Board and was a CB Radio enthusiast. Founder of Machesney Park Fourth of July celebration.

Avid Chicago Cubs and Bears fan. Joe enjoyed traveling, cruises, and fireworks. He coached the undefeated "Royals" girls' softball team through Harlem Youth Council at the Harlem Community Center. He loved spending time with his family at the cabin in Wisconsin.

Survivors include his wife, Debbie; daughters, Kim Walton and Carrie (Jody) Kropp of Waukesha, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Kayla, Sammi, Allie, Morgan, Braden, and Brody; sisters, Liz Harris and Vicky James; brother, Jerry (Holly) James; and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents and brothers, Dale, Russ, Dennis, and Mike.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 9, 2021 at Delehanty Funeral Home, Ltd., 401 River Lane, Loves Park, with a visitation prior from 10:00 a.m. until the service time.
Burial will be in the Sunset Memorial Gardens.
