ST. ANTHONY – Stanley Orville Banta, 81, died April 14, 1999 at his home near St. Anthony following a long illness.

He was born May 31, 1917, at Sultan, Wash., to Franklin Pierce Banta and Hattie June Glidden Banta . He grew up in Sultan, where he attended schools and graduated from Sultan High School. He then joined the U.S. Navy in 1936 and served through 1940. During World War II he also served for a few months until the war ended in 1945.

On Sept. 16, 1939, he married Matha LaVon Manwill at Long Beach, Calif. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. They lived in the South Pacific (Navy); Vallejo, Calif.; Sultan, Wash.; Payson, Utah; Mud Lake, Idaho; West Yellowstone, Mont.; Las Vegas, Nev.; Rock Springs, Wyo.; Los Angeles, Calif.; and finally settled at St. Anthony in 1984, where they have since resided. He worked as an ironworker most of his life, but he also managed restaurants for many years.

An active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints he and his wife served in the Birmingham Alabama Mission from 1982 to 1984. He was an avid member of the Democratic Party. He was also a member of the Lions Club, Elks Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars and obtained the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts.

Survivors include his wife, Matha Banta of St. Anthony; children Stanley Roy "Butch" (Karen) Banta of Kingman, Ariz.; Barbara Ann (Lou) Hale of Idaho Falls; Joe E. (Barbara) Banta of Baton Rouge, La.; Patsy (Dee) Young of St. Anthony; Wesley (Sherrie) Banta of Star Valley, Wyo.; 25 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Jay Banta in August 1998, and one sister Marie.

Funeral services will be Monday at noon at the St. Anthony LDS Stake Center with Bishop Brad Andreasen officiating. Friends may visit at Bidwell Funeral Home in St. Anthony Sunday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and at the church Monday for one hour before the services. Burial will be in the Wildford Cemetery, where military rites will be performed [Military rights performed by grandsons SFC James Young, CPT Kevin Banta and members of the Idaho National Guard].
