DECEMBER 18, 1950 – OCTOBER 2, 2021

SCPO US NAVY

Richard Allen Ray, 70, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 2, 2021, in Dallas, Texas, with his wife, Janice, and his daughters, Brandi and Mellissa, by his side. He was born on December 18, 1950, in Dallas, Texas to Charles and Betty Ray who preceded him in death. He is survived by his dedicated and loving wife, Janice; his oldest daughter, Brandi Workman and her husband, Stephen Workman; his youngest daughter, Mellissa VanBerg and her husband, David VanBerg; an older sister, Sue Doucet with her husband, Preston Doucet; and a younger sister, Charla Granberry with her husband, Mark Granberry. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Stephen Workman III, Dylan Eastwood, Garrett Mabry, Raena Biggar, Hope Mabry, Hannah Yacques, and Faith Workman along with one great-grandchild, Oakley Mabry, son of Garrett Mabry and his fiance', Brandie Hayden-Clayton; along with many more nephews, nieces, and great nephews and nieces. And last but not least, he is survived by his "twin," best friend, and cousin whom he loved dearly – Randy Dollgener. He was a patriarch in a big yet very tightly-knit family.

Most people called him Rick while others knew him as Ricky, brother, and "Chief." Rick was loved by many as he so consistently loved and served others throughout his lifetime. Six years ago, he was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. Over the past six years, he has fought fearlessly to remain with his loved ones. He loved life especially loved spending his life in the company of family and friends, near the ocean, fishing, or golfing. Rick was known to have some of the best block parties, gatherings, and get togethers. He loved a good ole' fish fry and shrimp boil. He lived each day as if it were his last.

Rick grew up in Dallas, Texas along with many close cousins with whom he made fun memories. He graduated from Grady Spruce High School in Pleasant Grove, also known as "the Grove." Before graduating high school, he made the decision to serve his country by joining the United States Navy. On July 30, 1969, he entered the Navy Active-Duty Reserves and continued to serve in the U.S. Navy for the next twenty-two years. He was highly respected and revered for his professionalism, knowledge, and skills. Just one of many of his Naval performance reviews from 1972 exemplified how he conducted himself through his entire life: "Petty Officer Ray's performance continues to be far superior to that normally required or expected as an E-4. An expert mechanic in the field, he requires no supervision;" he "takes initiative in any situation and proceeds with any given task in a truly professional manner; absolutely dependable and an eager volunteer." He is "exceptionally conscientious, tireless, and resourceful;" he "accepts responsibility with enthusiasm and has an ability to appreciate and respond to wit and a talent for amusing others." "He is completely reliable and would be an asset to any unit." These observations were evident in every facet of his life – work, personal, family, and extra-curricular. He retired, with many honors and awards, from the Navy as an E-8 Senior Chief in September 1990 after twenty-two years of faithful service.

Following his military career, he became an Air Force Advisor for the Kuwaiti Air Force while he spent six years living in Kuwait with Janice. After his time in Kuwait, he returned to the states and worked with his older sister at Fairpark Screen Printing and then his brother-in-law at Graphic Solutions. Two of his favorite places to live were Pensacola, Florida and Sanibel Island, Florida where he was close to the Gulf Coast. He spent the last few years in retirement traveling with his wife and spending time with family and friends. He will be desperately missed but is now without pain in a glorious, new, heavenly body and fishing Heaven's oceans with Jesus.

A memorial service will be held in his honor at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery on Wednesday, October 6th, 2021, at 3:30PM. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked to send donations to The Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society at https://support.nmcrs.org/a/homepage in memory of Richard Ray. Please notify his wife, Janice Ray, of your donation using the following address. Flowers, donations, and condolences may also be sent to 3709 Mountain Ranch Rd., Roanoke, Texas 76262.

The family would like to thank Steve Workman, his son-in-law, and the U.S. Navy service members for their guidance and effort in coordinating and performing a military honors memorial for Rick. They would also like to thank the nurses on the 11th floor of Baylor Hospital's Roberts Building for their compassion and care in his last hours; specifically, Britney, Kat, and Sana.
