The Rev. Bryan (Bud) Myers, 66, of Branford died peacefully at his home on September 29, 2021 after a year-long battle with prostate cancer.
Pastor Myers, more fondly known as Bud, was born to Paul and Dorothy Myers on April 16, 1955 in York, PA.
Bud graduated from Susquahannock High School and spent his college years at John Hopkins University, where he majored in science and pre-med. It was here that he developed a love for the theater through tech production and directing.
He was vice president of a small computer company before he went on to Gettysburg Seminary for four years to become a Lutheran pastor. Ordained in 1982, Pastor Myers served parishes in Manchester (Emanuel), Bridgeport (Salem) and Naugatuck (Salem) before coming to Tabor Church in Branford for 29 years. He was honored to become Pastor Emeritus upon his retirement in June. The congregation and community celebrated with an event which was the high point of his year.
Bud was a wonderful preacher, administrator and creative visionary. His open-hearted acceptance of everyone and his contagious love of life touched and inspired all who knew him. His greatest joy of ministry was working with teenagers. Bud spent decades driving vanloads of kids on mission trips, to Camp Calumet, National Youth Gatherings and New England events at Hammonasset. He influenced the lives of all these young adults and they remember him with gratitude and endless funny stories.
Bud was especially proud to establish the first Tabor Community Arts Center, after school program and summer camp. In return, he received state recognition for his contribution to the arts in Connecticut.
He served as president of Branford Interfaith Housing, BSA and a myriad of organizations through the years. Who could forget the years of "Bud's Spuds", "A Wing and a Prayer" or fried dough booths at the Branford Fest? That was a ministry of food and fun!
Bud and his wife Judy (Hall) were married in 1982. They opened their home to welcome, feed and care for relatives and people from all over the world who became family. This was the joy and adventure of their lives for 39 years.
Besides Judy, Bud leaves his beloved daughters Amanda (Jim) and Mimi (Nikola), as well as his Swedish daughter, Asa (Magnus, Agnes), and his Puerto Rican daughter, Geisha (Nina, John, Jayden). He was cherished by his sisters, Judi Fischer (Tom) and Shel Kelley, nephew PJ Kelley (Katie and Chase) and niece Ali Bliss (HB and Meara). He also leaves his sister-in-law, Randi Hall, who was his special angel and two sons-of-his-heart, Hans and Conner. Cousins, nieces, nephews and a host of dear friends will miss him so much as well. Before Bud died, he was able to meet his new grandson, Zarko. There could not have been a happier moment! Bud was predeceased by his parents, his dear mother-in-law Ida, his foster son, James Stevens and brother-in-law, Paul Kelley.
This last difficult year galvanized and demonstrated Bud's faith, his hope, and his amazing courage. He felt the love and concern of so many people during this time.
Bud has left us, but his life has blessed us all. His legacy of faith, love and laughter will remain in our hearts forever.
