Bridgton - Betty L. Crook Horton went to be with the Lord on October 2, 2021. She was born February 17, 1943, to William Crook Sr. and Althea Smith Crook in Bridgton and grew up on the family farm surrounded by many aunts, uncles, and cousins. She graduated Bridgton High School in 1961.
She married her soul mate, Walter A. Horton III on July 29, 1967. After briefly living in Concord, NH they purchased Betty's childhood homestead and moved back to Bridgton in 1969 to raise their family.
In 1977 Betty and best friend Dawn Babbitt, founded and built New Hope Animal Shelter, Inc.
Betty was president of the family corporation, Meldrum Green Co. Inc. for over 30 years.
In 1988, Betty was responsible for establishing Homeland Cemetery. She arranged for her great grandparents to be returned to the Homeland where they had lived and raised their families.
Betty, loved to host family gathering at her home in Bridgton or camp in Sweden. She enjoyed antiquing with her sister and mother.
Betty, along with her sister, created the Heritage Room, a lovely display of family heirlooms and photo albums.
Among her many interests were animals, Roy Rogers, and household projects, she had a very giving nature.
She is predeceased by her parents, brother William Crook, Jr. and sister Dorothea Crook Thomas. She will be dearly missed by her husband, daughter Carmen Horton and Cliff Daigle of Bridgton, daughter Kimberly Horton Camous and Gordon Camous of Norway, and son Walter Horton IV, (Zak) of Bridgton.
Also surviving her are her 6 grandchildren, Brogan Horton, and Cassidy Howard, Cameron Horton, Liam Opie and wife Gabby, Walter Horton V, (Nolan), Makyah Camous and Emilie Camous. Also 2 great grandchildren, Amelia, and Oliver Howard.
Those who welcomed her into heaven were many, especially her mother, father, brother, sister, best friend Dawn, and all the pets she dearly loved.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday October 9, 2021, at 3:00 pm at the family cemetery on 67 Middle Ridge Road Bridgton. Arrangements are under the care of Chandler Funeral Home and Cremation Service For more information, please visit www.chandlerfunerals.com
