Joseph "Joe" Conley Wood, age 72, of Perry, Florida passed away on September 28,2021 from a heart condition. His family is deeply saddened by his sudden death.
Joe was born on November 11, 1948 to Joseph Earl Wood and Avis Jeanette (Fuller) Wood in Charleston, South Carolina. After Joe graduated from Northeast High School in St. Petersburg, Florida in 1966, he went on to join the United States Coast Guard from 1968 to 1971 where he served on the USCGC Dauntless at the rank of Electronics Technician 2nd Class and received the National Defense Service Medal.
After the Coast Guard, he continued his career at AT&T as a field technician kickstarting a 31 year career in telecommunications. Joe spent the majority of his career in Florida but also spent time in California and Arizona while with AT&T.
In 1970, Joe married Irene Doyon (Velez) in Miami, Florida. Joe and Irene went on to have two children, Dorene and Jeffrey, and are no longer married.
In 2013, Joe retired and split his time as a handyman and devoting time to his church. Joe enjoyed tennis, boating, and fishing, but best of all he loved reading and studying the bible. Anyone who knew Joe was touched by his faith and a commitment to live a life that followed the narrow path.
He is survived by his sister, Shirley (Wood) Haines of Post Falls, Idaho, and his brother, Stanley Wood of Live Oak, Florida. He is also survived by his daughter Dorene J. (Wood) Burns and her husband Patrick Burns of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. He is also survived by his son Jeffrey D. Wood of Roseville, California. Joe was also the proud grandfather of four handsome grandsons: Brendan Burns, Logan Burns, Owen Burns, and Ethan Wood.
We will all miss him. Services will be held at Tallahassee National Cemetery 5015 Apalachee Pkwy, Tallahassee, FL 32311 on Thursday October 7th at 11:00.
