John Martinez, 75, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away Saturday, October 2, 2021, at McLaren Central Michigan in Mt. Pleasant. He was born January 27, 1946, in San Antonio, Texas, son of the late Rodolfo and Dolores (Ibarra) Martinez. After graduating from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1966, John married the love of his life, Sylvia Reyes, on December 26, 1966, at Bautista Roman Catholic Church in San Juan, Texas. John served his country as a member of the U.S. Army from 1967-1971 and spent two years in Vietnam from 1967-1968. In 1974 he began working for Central Michigan University, retiring in 2009 as a Journeyman HVAC. He was a member of Sacred Heart Parish and VFW Post 3033 where he served on the funeral honors team. Some of John's favorite pastimes were gardening, dancing, singing, and playing games with his grandchildren. You could often find John sitting in his garage smoking a cigarette and drinking a beer. He dearly loved his family, especially his grandchildren. John is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sylvia; two daughters, Virginia "Ginny" Fedewa and Melinda "Mindy" (Kevin) Miller, both of Mt. Pleasant; grandchildren, Spencer Ray Fedewa, Trever John (Rikki) Fedewa, Justin James Miller, and Matthew James Miller; siblings, Rodolfo (Maria Esperanza) Martinez and Helen (Jose) Reyes, both of Mt. Pleasant; sister in-law, Alicia Martinez of Mt. Pleasant; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant sister; brother, Benito Martinez; and son in-law, Kevin Fedewa. A Funeral Mass for John will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, October 8, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Loren Kalinowski as celebrant. Interment will follow in Memorial Gardens Cemetery. A luncheon will conclude at the VFW Post 3033. The family will receive friends at Charles R. Lux Family Funeral Home on Thursday from 1:00-3:00 p.m. and 5:00-7:30 p.m. with the Vigil beginning at 7:30 p.m. Visitation continues at the church on Friday one hour prior to Mass. Memorial contributions may be made to the family. Envelopes will be available at the church and funeral home.
