Af­ter or­din­a­tion in 1855, he pas­tored at church­es in New York; St. Al­bans, Ver­mont; Charles­town, Mas­sa­chu­setts; at the First Con­gre­ga­tion­al Church in Wash­ing­ton, DC, for 15 years; and at the Val­ley Con­gre­ga­tion­al Church, Orange, New Jer­sey. In 1889, he be­came pres­i­dent of How­ard Un­i­vers­i­ty. His works in­clude:

Cleveland, Nov. 29—The Rev. Dr. J. E. Rankin, formerly president
of Howard university, Washington, D. C,, died here yesterday
afternoon of pneumonia, aged 75 years. Dr. Rankin was born in Vermont. Dr. Rankin was the author of a number of well known hymns; the best known of which is "God be with you till we meet again".
