Edwin "Gene" Smith, 76, of Napoleon passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 2, 2021, at CHP Defiance Hospice Center.

Gene was born on July 19, 1945, to Presley and Mary Jane (Bowerman) Smith.

He proudly served our country in the United States Air Force Reserves. Gene was an engineer and worked for United Telephone, Sprint and eventually retired with EMBARC.

He married Betty Lou Mitchell in June of 1995 who survives.

Gene was one of the founding members of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Post #4428 of Napoleon. He served as a state officer, conductor and was a past president of the club.

He was also a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge post #788 of Napoleon. When his children were younger he helped coach little league. Gene enjoyed golfing and fibbing about his real score. He also tried his hand in leatherworking and participated in national bowling leagues in Wauseon.

Edwin is survived by his wife of twenty-six years, Betty Lou Smith; children, Mary (Brian) Adkins, Brian (Christina) Smith, Sherri (William) Lemay, Scott Smith and Greg Smith; twenty grandchildren and twenty-two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Dennis, Wayne (Patti) and Jeff (Liz) Smith and his beloved dog, Smitty.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his former wife, Janice Elaine Smith.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 6, 2021, at Walker-Hoening Mortuary (333 W. Main St.) of Napoleon from 1pm to 8 pm. A Fraternal Order of the Eagles service will take place at 7:30 pm. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 7, 2021, at the mortuary at 11 am with a visitation one hour prior. Burial will follow at Riverview Memory Gardens of Defiance.

Memorials in Gene's memory may be considered to CHP Defiance Hospice Center or the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Scholarship Fund.
