Carolyn James Cowan, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2007, in New Orleans after a long battle with cancer.
She was the daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. Benjamin Harwood James of Beckley, W.Va. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Rev, Harry L. Cowan. Her daughter and son-inlaw, Becky and Steve Patterson and her grandson, Tyler, of Alcoa, Tenn., also survive her. Her brother and sister-in-law, Ben and Pam James, and niece and nephews, Ashley, BJ and Tyler James of Fort Collins, Colo., also survive her. Friend and business partner, Joe Simon, will also miss her.
Carolyn was a very talented musician who studied piano and organ at Oberlin College, Ohio, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Ky., and Loyola University in New Orleans. She taught music and shared her talents with many through the years.
Carolyn played organ for First Baptist Church in Decatur (1959-1965) when her husband, Harry, was minister of music. They served at First Baptist Church New Orleans for 25 years. For the last 17 years, she has been co-owner of Joe Simon Jazz, Inc. as business manager and event planner.
Friends are invited to attend the visitation at First Baptist Church New Orleans, 5290 Canal Blvd., New Orleans, today, Dec. 6, 2007, from noon to 2 p.m. Funeral service will follow at 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Faith Baptist Church, New Orleans, or to Bridgehouse.

Second service will take place on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2007, at Akard Funeral Home, 1912 West State, Bristol, Tenn. Visitation at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until time of service. The funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Bristol, Va.
