Henry S. Drinker
May 29, 1914 - November 10, 2007

Henry Sandwith Drinker, 93, of Bedford, formerly of Concord and Carlisle, died Saturday, November 10, 2007 at Carleton-Willard Village in Bedford. He was the beloved husband for sixty-five years of Ruth (Brooks) Drinker.

Born in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania on May 29, 1914 he was the son of the late Henry S. and Sophie (Hutchinson) Drinker. In 1937 he graduated from Haverford College in Pennsylvania receiving a B.S. in Engineering.

During World War II, he served in industry for Bendix-Pioneer, a Division of Bendix Aviation Corporation and participated and managed the development of an automatic pilot for aircraft.

In 1942, he married Ruth Brooks of Concord, Massachusetts and in 1947, they moved to Concord from New Jersey with their two children, Ann and Henry.

Mr. Drinker served twenty six years with the technically-oriented Foxboro Company of Foxboro, Massachusetts starting in sales and later heading the company's corporate product development and engineering. He became corporate Vice President and Secretary, retiring in 1976 to a new home in Carlisle, Massachusetts.

Retirement from business in 1976 gave him time to expand his basement machine shop and to more intensely pursue his long-standing hobby of making custom gunstocks. He was persistently independent in his thinking, rational, pragmatic and analytical.

Mr. Drinker became associated with the Concord Community Chest during its infancy, and later became President. He served on Concord's Finance Committee, and for many years was the director and later President of Concord Family Service.

An accomplished cellist, he was devoted to the works of Brahms. His appreciation of music was inherited from his father as well as his love of sailing. In his later years he added tennis, skiing and golf to his outdoor activities. He was introduced by his father to game bird shooting and fishing at an early age. He pursued these activities with enthusiasm throughout his life, joined often by his wife, their son and grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, Ruth, he is survived by his son, Dr. Henry Drinker of Holyoke, his daughter, Ann Retherford of Ledyard, Connecticut, 1 sister, Cecilia Saltonstall of Exeter, New Hampshire, 5 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. He was also the brother of the late Pemberton H. Drinker, Ernesta Drinker Ballard and Sophie Drinker.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 1st at 2 PM at Carleton-Willard Village, Bedford.

Burial will be in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Concord.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Carleton-Willard Village, 106 Old Billerica Road, Bedford, MA 01730 or to Emerson Hospital, c/o development office, ORNAC, Concord, MA 01742.
