Indianapolis - Linda Janelle (Nixon) Haas, age 78, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 26, 2021, at her home in Indianapolis after a 4-year long battle with brain cancer. Her beloved sons, Scott, Kurt, Ryan, and her husband of 30 years, Bob, were by her side.
Linda was born on January 26, 1943, to George and Berneida (Boyd) Nixon. She attended Royerton schools throughout her childhood and early teen years but graduated from Muncie Central High School after moving from rural Delaware County to the city. After graduating, Linda became a dental assistant to Dr. Henry Leff but put aside her career to care for her growing family. Years later, once her children were grown, she returned to the workforce, joining Willowbrook Interiors from 1980-1990. Later, she became a freelance designer and worked with clients throughout East Central Indiana.
Linda made a name for herself as an interior decorator and was much in demand. In addition to serving her design clients, Linda was generous with her time and talents to her friends and family. She had a hand in decorating dozens of homes from Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, to Traverse City, Michigan. Her impeccable taste was legendary, as was her uncompromising attention to detail. She spent countless hours on design work, which she loved.
Most importantly, Linda had an intense love and steadfast loyalty to her family. She was the second of seven children, and in her mother Berneida's memoirs, she notes, "Our family always called Linda 'the little mother of our family.' When a new baby arrived, she always wanted to give them their baby bottle and change them. I sure liked this as it freed me up to do other things." Naturally, this nurturing quality extended to her children and grandchildren, who were central to her life, and beyond that, she shared her love with her nieces and nephews, several of whom considered her their second mother. In addition, she was a member of "the Nixon girls," an exclusive club that included her four sisters and her mother, whose sole purpose was to love and laugh and provide support when needed.
Linda was famous for bringing the family together for birthdays and holidays. Thanksgiving dinners for 40 people were "no problem," and in addition to her delicious pecan and pumpkin pies, the good linens, crystal, silver, fine china, and flower arrangements were a must. At Christmas, she decorated 3 or 4 massive trees, wrapped dozens of presents, hosted business and social gatherings, and always made her guests feel welcome and very special.
Linda seemed to have boundless energy and uncommon joy in helping others. She also had a dry and sharp sense of humor. While her general demeanor was warm and friendly, Linda was no pushover, as all who knew her would attest. She loved gardening, cooking, being on the water, driving fast, big purses, traveling, and anything sweet.
Linda leaves behind her adoring family, including her husband, Robert A. Haas, Jr., her sons, and their spouses and children: Scott Jones, fiancé Liz King, and children Mason, Spencer, and Lauryn; Kurt and Paulette Jones, and children Joshua and Lillyanna; Ryan and Kassie Jones, and children Maddalynn and KinsLeigh, Traci and Dean Kapsalis, and children Camille and Gus. Also, her siblings Diann Studebaker, children Todd and Devin; Jay and Patty Nixon, children Adam and Margo; Anita and Frank Ciaccio, children Angela, Matt, Hunter, Ben and Nick; Vicky and Frances Sarrazine, children Nick, Brandon, Nicole, and Dustin; Kim and Bob Beasley, children John, Katie, Sam, Caleb, and Luke; and Mark and Sheri Nixon, children Jarrett, Ellianna, and Ava. She was preceded in death by parents, George and Berneida Nixon, Robert and Jean Haas, and nephews Joshua Campbell and Kyle Whetsel.
Services will take place on Monday, October 11 at 1:00 p.m. at The Garden at Gethsemane United Methodist Church, 1201 W. McGalliard Road in Muncie, with Reverend Vickie Perkins officiating. Fittingly, Linda and Reverend Vickie became good friends while Linda was doing interior design work for the church during their remodel. Calling hours are before the service, from 11 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Elm Ridge Cemetery. Meeks Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
