Novelist, screenwriter. Her father, a certified public accountant, died in the influenza epidemic of 1918. After his death, she was raised in Santa Monica by her mother and grandparents. Attending an all-girl's private school she began - at the age of 13 - to write seriously, opting for a career in writing. She joined the Los Angeles Science Fiction Society in 1939 and worked from this time as a free-lance writer. In 1940 her first published science fiction story, "Martian Quest" appeared in Astounding Science Fiction. As a novelist she specialized in science fiction, crime and mystery. Worked only sporadically in films and television - alone or in collaboration - notably for Howard Hawks. Credits include "The Big Sleep" (1946), "Rio Bravo"(1959), "Gold of the Seven Saints"(1960), "Hatari"(1961), "El Dorado"(1966), "Rio Lobo" (1970) and "The Long Goodbye"(1973). She also worked on "The Empire Strikes Back," the first Star Wars sequel. She died of cancer.
