Obituary
Longtime Broomfield Police Department Commander, Justin "Jay" Richard Johnson, passed away unexpectedly on September 21, 2021 at the age of 57.

Johnson is survived by his sons, Logan and Cooper; his mother, Karen Johnson; his mother-in-law, Janet Liming; his sister, Misti Johnson; and his brother-in-law, Kevin Horton. He is preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Johnson; and his father, Richard Johnson.

Jay grew up in Golden, Colorado and attended Golden High School and Metro State College. He was hired as a Patrol Officer for the Broomfield Police Department in 1988, and was promoted through the years to Sergeant and then Commander. Jay graduated from the FBI National Academy in 2007. In 1997 Jay married Carolyn, and they adopted their sons, Logan in 2003 and Cooper in 2005.

Jay was a devoted husband and a dedicated father. He was very involved in Logan and Cooper's sports and loved going to watch their games. Over the years, the boys played baseball, soccer, football, basketball, and lacrosse. Jay's locker at the police department was covered from top to bottom with pictures of his boys in sports uniforms throughout the years.

When Jay was younger, he enjoyed fishing, bowling, golfing, and skiing with his father. He also worked for his Dad for a number of years, where he learned many different trades. Jay's personal hobbies included riding his motorcycle, building legos with the boys, working on computers, and tinkering with his cars and "truck."

Commander Johnson loved being a policeman, and he loved Broomfield. He will be remembered as a loyal servant and a loving soul. Jay will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.

A funeral service is scheduled for 10:00 am on October 4 at Flatirons Church in Lafayette, CO. A livestream of the service will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. and will be available here. In lieu of flowers the family respectfully asks that donations be sent to the Colorado Police Officers Foundation, which is collecting funds to assist the Johnson family. The Colorado Police Officers Foundation is part of the Colorado State Fraternal Order of Police. Donations are tax deductible and can be made here.
