Obituary
Donna Lorene (Hibbs) Davis of rural Numa, 95, passed away on September 29, 2021 at her home on the farm where she resided until her death.

She was born on May 1, 1926 to Harley and Ruth (McElvain) Hibbs at their home near Numa, Iowa. Later she was joined by one sister, Dorothy. Donna spent all of her early years on the farm west of Numa.

Donna was educated at the Farmer rural school, Seymour High School, Centerville Junior College (now Indian Hills Community College), and Iowa State Teacher's College (now University of Northern Iowa) in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Donna's four excellent rural school teachers served as role models and enhanced her desire to become an elementary teacher. This dream was realized and she taught in the elementary grades in Numa, Marengo, and Seymour schools.

On August 14, 1947, Donna was married to Milan Davis and they lived in Seymour for a couple of years. They celebrated 59 years of marriage. When Donna and Milan moved to their farm in her home community in 1951, she became a member of the neighborhood Booster Club. Her mother and aunt were charter members of this group and were instrumental in its organization in 1934. It disbanded in 2004 after existing for seventy years.

When they became parents, Donna chose to become a full-time mother and homemaker. She also worked with her husband in their livestock farming operation. In later years, she became a substitute teacher in the Seymour Community Schools. She enjoyed the variety and challenge of substituting and did this for fifteen years. Helping children learn and mature was a life-long joy. In working with children, she felt that having a positive attitude herself was of utmost importance. In later years, she treasured the time spent with each of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Donna was active in the Jerome United Methodist Church for a number of years where she taught Vacation Bible School and helped serve many smorgasbords. She was currently a member of the First Christian Church in Cincinnati where her daughter, Kay Singley, is pastor. She took her turn teaching the adult Sunday School Class and sang in the choir there.

For several years, Donna was co-leader of the Lincoln Luckies 4-H Club where her daughters were members. A group of Iowa State Teacher College friends, called the Petunias, was very special to her. They have met regularly with their spouses and families for nearly 70 years. She also enjoyed her membership in Chapter DM, PEO, in Seymour.

Donna enjoyed what she called her "courthouse project". She and Milan traveled to many county seats in Iowa to take pictures of courthouses and learn about their history. She also kept scrapbooks of clippings that were of interest to her and her family. Her collection of bells was special to her because all family members had added to it at one time or another. She liked to write letters to family members and friends. Donna especially enjoyed taking walks around the farm either alone or accompanied by family members. The times grandchildren joined her were memorable.

Donna was a faithful caregiver, caring for her husband, her mother, and her father-in-law in her home during their later years. She also oversaw the affairs of her aunt in her elderly years.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who always treasured her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Milan, on May 22, 2007, her loving parents, Ruth and Harley Hibbs, sister, Dorothy C. DeVore, her parents-in-law, Clement and Marie Davis, her son-in-law, Rob Singley, brothers-in-law, Kenneth I. DeVore and Torcie Merlin Davis, sister-in-law, Dolores Davis, a niece, Phyllis Davis and several treasured aunts, uncles, and cousins.

She is survived by two daughters, Kay Singley of Moulton, Jan Berner and husband Kim of Albia, and a son, Bruce Davis and wife Deana of Numa; eight grandchildren: Andrea DeWeese and husband Jeffrey of Iowa Falls, Iowa; Rachel Singley and friend, Dr. Andrew Bellizzi of Iowa City, Iowa, Beth Maddy and husband Eric of Adel, Iowa, Jill Parker and husband, Gabe of Adel, Iowa, Jon Davis of Numa, Iowa, Maria, April, and Luke Davis of Numa, Iowa.

She is also survived by eleven great-grandchildren: Darby, Aidan, Emmayln, Amelia, Wyatt, Meredith, Bridget, Gregory, Brenna, Will, and June, nephews: Dennis Davis, Martin (Rochelle) DeVore, nieces, Gerri Lou Davis, Kathy (Carter) Heitmeyer, Kristen (Ken) Kruger, Dorine (Dan) Sales, Denise (Brian) Draper, and their families; a special cousin, Jane Ann (Bill) Mahon, and a long-time co-worker and neighbor, Barbara Eddy.

The family would like to especially thank Donna's caregivers supporting her with loving care: Laura Jean Yarger, Deon Brown and EveryStep Home Care & Hospice staff.

Funeral services will be at the Thomas Funeral Home in Seymour on Sunday, October 10, 2021 at 2:00 PM. A visitation will be held at the Thomas Funeral Home in Seymour on Saturday, October 9, 2021 from 12:00 noon until 6:00 PM, with family present from 4:00 – 6:00 PM.
