Funeral service will be 2:00 pm Saturday, March 27, 2021 at Collier-Butler Chapel for William A. "Bill" Humphries, age 91 of Rainbow City, who passed away Tuesday, March 23, 2021. Burial will be at Crestwood Cemetery. Collier-Butler Funeral and Cremation Services directing.

Bill was born on March 27, 1927 in Ashville, AL to Ethel and Louie Humphries. They moved to the home place in South Gadsden when Republic Steel was being built. Their large family farmed and most men in their family had long careers at the steel plant. Bill worked in the mess hall at an early age in addition to farm duties. Bill will always be remembered as Dynamite Humphries for being a hard-nosed fullback on the '48 and '49 football teams at Etowah High School. He was a Blue Devil 'til his last days. Bill signed a scholarship with Auburn University and married his high school sweetheart, Amy Sue Woody. The Korean War was beginning and Bill joined the Navy in 1950. He took pride in his military service where he served as an ordinance man on a fighter/bomber aircraft, where he traveled the world. He completed his Naval career in 1954. Bill and Amy had 3 children, Susan, Bill Jr. and David. Upon his release from the Navy they moved to Gadsden, AL, where he went to work for Republic Steel. He had a long career at the steel plant as a roller in the Hot Strip Mill and retired from there shortly before it closed. During his life he coached South Gadsden Civitans Pony League Baseball teams and Jessie Dean Smith pee-wee football teams. He attended Edgewood Baptist Church for many years. His life was spent taking care of his family and enjoying his neighborhood kids, especially his sister Betty and her children, Denise Bryant, Vance Roberson, Marsha Tucker and John Roberson, all of whom he loved as his own. Amy Sue passed in 2008 and the following years were spent with his special companion Florence Dial, who brought joy into his life. Her family loved Bill and he loved them. Bill lived a full life and will be remembered as a good man who loved his family and willing to help those in need.
