"Henry" was the first of six children born to James Clayton Ashby & Mary Frances FOSTER Ashby. As a baby and toddler, Henry moved with his parents from Iowa in August of 1856 and traveled through Missouri to arrive at their destination in Kansas in 1857. Henry's Uncle Bladen Ashby and Aunt Elizabeth FOSTER Ashby, and their first two daughters "Hattie" and "Ettie" moved with them. The two families built homes along the same creek in the Prairie City area, later known as Baldwin City.
