On 17 Oct 1970, C/14 and an ARVN unit were ambushed while conducting a mine sweep about 10 miles south-southeast of Quang Tri City. The ensuing fight resulted in ten dead North Vietnamese, two dead US soldiers, and a number of US and ARVN wounded.
Then-Private First Class Zager received the Silver Star for his actions during the ambush. He also received a posthumous promotion to Corporal.
His parents chose to bury their son in Greenwood Cemetery, which confirms his burial in Lot 294, Block 33, Grave 3.
