Eleanor Green ('Peggy') was the daugther of a wealthy American doctor. She married Prince Viggo of Denmark in 1924, and the couple settled in Copenhagen. Prince Viggo was a career officer with the Household Cavalry. He relinquished his title and succession rights and was created Count Viggo of Rosenborg. However the couple were popularly known as Prince and Princess Viggo.
Her paternal grandfather was a founder and president of the Western Union Corporation. Her mother was the daughter of New York City mayor Abram Stevens Hewitt and his wife Sarah Amelia (Cooper) Hewitt, daughter of philanthropist and US presidential candidate Peter Cooper. Eleanore's mother was one of the 3 Hewitt sisters who helped establish what is today known as the Cooper Hewitt Museum in New York City.
