Obituary is from the Welch Funeral Home (Marks Chapel, Warsaw, Va.) website, posted September 27, 2021:
Donald "Curtis" Hayes, Sr., 87, of Warsaw passed away on Sunday, September 26, 2021. Curtis was born in Rexburg, Virginia, in Essex County and was the son of the late Henry Pollard Hayes and the late Lois Evelyn Crowley Hayes. He was the devoted husband of Emma Jean Martin Hayes. At the time of his passing, they had been married for 64 years. Curtis was a member of Nomini Baptist Church in Montross and retired from a decades-long career as a supervisor at the Levi Strauss factory in Warsaw. He then enjoyed a 19-year retirement career with Walmart. He also served his country with honor in the United States Navy.
Curtis loved to be outdoors. He grew up on his family's 600 acre farm in Essex County and pulled his weight helping with and tending to the farm. He learned how to run all of the farm machinery and take care of the crops. Curtis was a gifted athlete in school and played football, baseball, and basketball. He was an avid deer hunter in his younger years and as he got older was drawn more to rabbit hunting. He enjoyed fishing throughout his life and loved tending to his garden. He enjoyed playing golf throughout his adult life. Curtis's love for baseball resurfaced when his children came along, and he coached their Little League teams and eventually moved on to coaching men's leagues. He loved cheering on his favorite team, The Dallas Cowboys (except when Washington beat them)!
He was always active, and he had a wonderful work ethic. From his work on the family farm as a very young man, to his time in the Navy, to his careers at Levi's and Walmart - Curtis never stopped working. His naval service on the U.S.S. Robinson was something that he was especially proud of. He had the distinction of holding a "Round the World Card", which, as its name suggests, meant that he had circumnavigated the globe on the Robinson - a Fletcher Class destroyer.
Curtis is survived by his wife; his sons Dale Hayes and Darren Hayes (Julie); his daughter Debbie Hayes Lee (Matt); his grandchildren: Michelle, Taylor, Bud, Dustin, Cayden, Pic, Drake, Cacee and Cain; and his great-grandchildren, Kamdyn and David. He had a very special bond with his granddaughter Cayden M. Collins. Curtis was predeceased by his eldest son, Donald "Donnie" Curtis Hayes, Jr. and all of his brothers: Thomas Hayes, Mutt Hayes and Ben Hayes. All of Curtis's many accomplishments paled in comparison to his family. Nothing made Curtis prouder than being a husband, father, brother and grandfather.
A graveside funeral service for Curtis will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 29, 2021 at the Nomini Baptist Church Cemetery. The Reverend Steve Taylor will officiate. Pallbearers are: Gary Hayes, Perry Hayes, Tommy Hayes, George Squires, Dale Hayes, Jr., and Mike Allen. The family will receive friends at Welch Funeral Home in Warsaw from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. that day. His family requests that in lieu of flowers you honor Curtis's love of children by making a donation in his memory to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
