Richard Edward Gardner was born January 24, 1944, to George Anthony Gardner and Mary Frances Hastings in Galveston, Texas. Richard's parents were from Port Arthur, Texas but moved to Galveston, Texas for George Gardner's job and Gray Iron Works. When World War II broke out, George Gardner became a Merchant Marine aboard the SS Oklahoma, which was a Texaco tanker carrying fuel for the war effort. George Gardner was killed March 28, 1945, at age 25, when a German U-boat sunk the SS Oklahoma. Richard and his mother then moved back to Port Arthur to live with her parents.

Five years later Mary met and married Robert File. Bob and Mary later moved to Bellaire, Texas and built their first home. In the next few years, Richard became a big brother to Bobby and Danny File.

Richard graduated from Bellaire High school in 1962. When he was 19 years old, he got his first job with Cameron Iron Works. He started out working in Cameron's shop and then took a five-year apprenticeship program. He eventually worked his way from the shop to an office and worked in the drafting department. He was a Manufacturing Engineer his whole life in the Oil Took business and later worked with manufacturing in offshore oil platforms and sub-sea equipment. He retired in 2013.

Richard married Susan Gilbertson in 1971 in Houston, Texas where they became the parents of Michael Gardner and Jennifer Gardner Kitchens. He was a loving and devoted Christian husband, father and grandfather.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents Robert W File and Mary Frances File. He is survived by his wife Susan, son Michael Gardner and grandsons' Brendan and Braydan Gardner. Daughter Jennifer Gardner Kitchens and son-in-law James Kitchens and grandchildren Devin, Bo and Gracie Kitchens. His brother Bobby File and sister-in-law Marty File and nieces Tricia Hulet and Husband David Hulet. Megan Schenk and husband Brady Schenk and children Riley and Graham Schenk. Brother Dan File and sister-in-law Ruthanne and nephew Danny File.

A service will be held in Houston, Texas on October 1, 2021, followed by a burial in Klein Memorial Park Cemetery Cy Fair location.
