Bobby Al White, 82, of Dewey, died Monday in Bartlesville. Bulldogger Bob has crossed over to his Heavenly home but will be missed by many on earth.
Bobby - or Bob as he was known - was born the son of Almon Chester and Mildred Elaine (Henderson) White on April 8, 1939, in Tulsa. He was raised with his brother Billy in Shidler, OK, and Bob graduated high school in 1957. During his youth he developed a love for old cars with an emphasis on old. Throughout his life, Bob had an old convertible that was always in need of his attention and more TLC (tender loving care).
While working at the local grocery, young Bob found a liking for what would become his trademark breakfast, which was day-old chocolate hostess cakes chased down with a Pepsi. And, if you worked with Bob you definitely knew this because he had it every day since. With his family he hauled grain, baled hay, and cared for cattle - learning the importance of honest work. He went on to study at Southwestern State University in Weatherford, OK, where he played football and, most notably, where he met the love of his life Joy Gover.
Bob graduated with his teaching degree and married Joy on August 10, 1962. He accepted his first coaching and teaching position with Dewey Public Schools, where they lived just a few blocks from their current home. Bob served in Dewey for a few years before moving the family to Dexter, New Mexico, from 1965 to 1972, where his track team earned a state title.
Dewey needed Bob and they offered him the Head Coaching job for the football team and along with other sports, he returned. Over the course of his career, Bob taught jr. high science and math, then went on to be the Jr. High Principal and finally the Senior High Principal where some kids called him Bulldogger Bob. He also made time to earn his Masters degree and finally retired with 39 years of teaching experience - or experiences whichever you prefer. If the school halls and walls could talk, there would be countless stories we'd hear, but Bob touched many lives, minds and hearts.
His passions in life centered around family, music, old cars, art, and most importantly the Lord. The boys remember many memorable family camping and fishing trips they took all over. He always had an old convertible that was sure to need a small repair (or an overhaul!). Bob loved the Lord and was active in the church. He led the music at Bluestem Baptist Church and played the trumpet in the First Baptist Church orchestra for many years. For the past few years, they have been members of the New Hope Indian Methodist Church in Dewey.
Along with his soulmate Joy, Bob was an artist. Bob was a silversmith specializing in turquoise jewelry and she is a Native American beader, and together the Whites showed and displayed their art at Oklahoma Indian Summer, Pow-Wows and art shows. They made yearly trips out to New Mexico and Arizona looking for the best pieces of turquoise for his creations. Bob never stopped learning and seeing the beauty and potential in each rock he came across. A fond memory was of meeting Jim Nabors, the comedian and actor aka G-G-G-Gomer Pyle, who visited Bartlesville and took home a piece of Bob's turquoise jewelry.
Bob is survived by his beloved bride of 59 years Joy; three children, Stephen White and Lisa, Robie White and Kay, and Debra Kay Mooney; and three grandchildren, Mikela White, Gavin White and Madie White; and a host of family and friends. As an educator, Bob also leaves behind a legacy for generations of Bulldoggers and families to come. He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson Austyn White.
