James Wiley (J.W.) Pope was born December 31, 1934 in Leander, Texas, the son of Jack and Vena (Smart) Pope.
He passed from this life September 22, 2021 in Bertram, Texas at the age of 86.
J.W. lived in Leander until moving to Burnet in 2006.
In his youth enjoyed showing cattle, roping and riding and training cutting horses; he also enjoyed hunting, fishing and cutting and baling hay for his cattle.
J.W. was a cattle rancher for many years. He owned and operated several businesses in the Leander area, such as Pope's General Feed Store and Pope's Barbeque. He served on Place 4 of Leander City Council; the board of directors at 1st State Bank of Leander; was a lifetime founding member of the NRA and also a member of the First Baptist Church of Leander.
He worked for Texas Crushed Stone in Georgetown and was very proud of his 52 years of service.
J.W. and Betty Moore were united in marriage on May 1, 1970 and she preceded him in death on January 21, 2021.
He was also preceded in death by his father, Jack Pope, step-mother, Jerry Pope and mother, Vena Pope; brother Wesley Pope; sister, Diane Monahan; step-daughter, Betsy Pope and a granddaughter, Tisha Williams.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Jayleen and David Lloyd and their children, David and Blayne Lloyd; granddaughter, Ashton Pope; step-children, Debbie Galliher, Lynn Nelson, Fran Sessler and husband Jeff and Bill Nelson and wife Zona; step-grandchildren, Nicole Autry, Amy Nelson, Talina Barker, Joe Sessler, Wendy Nelson, Kevin Cosper; step-sister, Susie Irwin; and a host of step-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and TCS work family.
Visitation will be held Saturday, October 2, 2021 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Funeral services will be held Sunday, October 3, 2021 at 2:00 pm at Cook-Walden Davis Funeral Home with Minister Barbra Sonnen-Hernandez officiating.
Interment will follow at Bagdad Cemetery in Leander.
