Granger-John M. Barrett, 83, passed away September 22, 2021. John was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Diane (Pelcin); his father, Thomas S. and mother, Clara (Snyder); sister, Claire; brother, Thomas P (Clare); and nephew, Thomas P., Jr.

He is survived by sister-in-law, Mary Ellen (Ray) Halicki; niece, Colleen; nephews, Tim and Brian (Heather) Barrett, Brian (Maria) Pelcin, Craig (Kathleen) Pelcin, and David (Heidi), Michael (Jennifer), and Jeffrey (Rachael) Halicki. John was blessed with 8 great-nephews; 6 great-nieces; three great-great-nieces; and one great-great-nephew.

John was always known by "Uncle Mike" or Mike to his family.

He completed grade school at St James in Lakewood, Ohio, and graduated high school from St. Ignatius in Cleveland, Ohio. He then went on to Notre Dame University where he achieved a bachelor's & master's degree. He remained a lifelong fan & supporter of the University.

John then joined the order of the Holy Cross Brothers where he held various roles from educator to administrator. He always remained committed to the church and worked as a fundraiser for several dioceses over his career after leaving the order.

He married the love of his life, Diane, September 28, 1979, and together, they worked in Delaware, Kentucky, Diocese of Fort Wayne/South Bend, and for the Augustinian Fathers in Chicago where they did fundraising.

John loved music, loved to sing and enjoyed being in the church choir. He enjoyed the theater. He likely got the love of music from his mother who was an expert pianist.

John was a caring and devoted husband and loved his family. He especially revered his sister, whom he would call and check in on regularly.

He will be dearly missed.

His life will be celebrated at a Mass of Christian burial at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 52553 Fir Road, Granger, Indiana 46530 at 11:00 a.m. with visitation an hour before Mass, on Wednesday, September 29. The Mass can be viewed live at StPius.net and facebook.com/StPiusGranger

The family would like to thank Heart to Heart Hospice, especially Laurie Potterbaum, for the exceptional care that was shown to John.
