On Tuesday, June 22, 2021, Nina Elizabeth Syfan Chapman died in the peace and comfort of her home.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, William Marshall Chapman. She was the only child of Ralph Jackson and Eunice West Syfan. Born in Abbeville, SC on May 22, 1931, Liz attended Abbeville Schools and graduated from Converse College in 1953 where, in addition to a summer at Erskine College, a lifelong love of history was kindled. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church as an elder and chairman of the Purnell Committee. As a loyal member of Circle 7, she led the Bible study for a number of years. She also provided greens for the Chapel with love from her garden until her 80s. She served her community as President of the Music Foundation of Greater Spartanburg and as scout leader and board member of the Piedmont area of the Girl Scouts. Liz was given the Mary Mildred Sullivan Award by Wofford College in 1995.

She was blessed with and is survived by her three children, Margaret Chapman Jackson (David), Elizabeth Chapman Delorm (Tim), and William Marshall Chapman, Jr.; and by seven grandchildren, David Whitney Jackson, III, William Marshall Chapman Jackson, Thomas Syfan Jackson, William Nelson Delorm, Emma Catherine Delorm, Rebecca McDuffie Chapman, and Caroline Marshall Chapman; and their mother, Margaret Anne McDuffie.

She will be remembered for her abiding love and devotion to God and her church and to her family. From the produce of her garden, creations from her kitchen, and her voracious knowledge of history, she was endlessly curious on all things. She was always quick with her warm and embracing smile. Liz appreciated and loved the help and devotion of Ruth, Joanne, Delores, S'Ann, Bet, and Libbo; and especially the late Richard Staggs.

A service of remembrance will be held Friday, June 25th, 10:00AM at the First Presbyterian Church Spartanburg. The burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.

In remembrance of Mrs. Chapman, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church Spartanburg, Purnell Fund, 393 E. Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302 or to Spartanburg Regional Hospice, C/O Spartanburg Regional Foundation, P O Box 2624, Spartanburg, SC 29304.
