Amy Butler of McHenry, Illinois, gained her wings on September 23, 2021 at the age of 51, after nearly a 7 year battle with stage IV colon cancer. Those close to her often referred to her as the honey badger for her relentless and fierce fight against the disease.
Amy was raised in Harvard, Illinois and loved the Harvard Milk Day celebrations, passing on the tradition to her family and friends. An avid and passionate animal lover, she volunteered with the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of McHenry County as a teen, inspiring her lifelong appreciation for wildlife. Amy had a great love and connection with cows, so much so that she would often insist that her husband, Tim, stop on the side of the road when she saw them in pastures.
Amy worked for many years as a medical assistant for Dr. Roger A. Lundquist and Dr. George L. Stankevych. Her work experience would provide her with valuable knowledge for the fight of her life.
Amy is remembered for being a loyal and loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, cousin, sister-in-law and friend. She made her way into everyone's heart and became close friends with everyone, including her doctors, nurses and caretakers. She was an active member of the Facebook support group, Colontown, and credited the group with extending her life. Colontown provided her the tools to become an advocate for colorectal cancer awareness. She traveled the country, including Washington, D.C., multiple times where she spoke with members of Congress, scientists and advocates lobbying for early detection and treatment of colon cancer. She prided herself on co-authoring research and patient advocacy journals. Amy did everything she could to defeat cancer. After conventional treatments failed, she willingly participated in six clinical trials around the country. Her family is grateful to Mayo Clinic, University of Chicago, START Midwest, the National Institute of Health and Advocate Health Care-Hematology Oncology-Dr. Thomas Weyburn for helping to give her as much time as possible with her loved ones.
