Physician and Scientist. Born in Germany, he received his medical degree before moving to the United States in 1832. He began a medical practice in St. Louis and helped to found the Western Academy of Natural Science. He had a great interest in plants and devoted much time to conduct experiments in botany. He eventually became an expert in plants and gained international attention for the scientific articles he wrote on the subject. He established the Academy of Science of St. Louis in 1856 and served as its first president. St. Louis businessman Henry Shaw consulted Engelmann about creating a large horticultural and botanical garden in St. Louis. The Missouri Botanical Garden (Shaw's Garden) is the result and is still in existence today.
