Joseph Louis Barnes was born to Philip Irvin Barnes (Nelson Co.KY) and Sarah Margaret Noe (Green Co. KY) in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky in 1905.

He married Bertha Mae Thompson daughter of Napoleon Bonaparte Thompson (Jefferson Co. KY) and Augusta Amanda Tharp (Bullitt Co. KY) on 22 June 1926 in Clark Co, IN.

Together they had 3 children, two of which died in infancy. Mary Catherine Barnes (6 NOV 1931 - 11 NOV 1931) and Everett Lee Barnes (27 NOV 1942 - 22 DEC 1942) both of Louisville, KY.

Joe Barnes passed away at Louisville General Hospital on Christmas Day 25 DEC 1951 from cirrhosis of the liver leaving behind his wife Bertha and 6 month old son, Scrapy "Louis"Barnes. His usual residence was 446 Adams St, Louisville, KY.

Joe Barnes's brother, Amos Barnes was at one time the caretaker of Pennsylvania Run Cemetery and was the reason many of the Barnes family are buried at this site. Unfortunately, due to poor record keeping, the plots of many family members are unmarked and unknown as to where they are buried.

There are multiple plots near his brother Amos Barnes in the old side of the cemetery, and it is believed that Joseph Louis Barnes is buried there. His two children, Mary Catherine and Everett Lee are also buried there but location is unknown.

His wife Bertha Mae Thompson Barnes moved to Pikeville, KY in the 1970's and passed away in 2001. She is buried at Johnson Memorial Park Cemetery in Pikeville, KY.
