He graduated from Mount Jackson High School, and Penn State University in 1962 with a bachelor of science degree in dairy sciences. He served in World War II as a bombardier in the 8th Air Force. He was shot down over Germany and spent more than a year in POW camps. He was twice decorated (Purple Heart and oak leaf cluster) for his service. He served again in the Korean War as a navigator and radar instructor. He attained the rank of captain in the Air Force. After his years in the service, he was a successful farmer and community leader in Pennsylvania. The family moved to California in the 1960s, where he was dairy inspector for Santa Barbara County, before becoming an investment adviser. He retired in 1998 after nearly 40 years with UBS/Paine Webber in Santa Barbara. He was a 33rd-degree Freemason, a member of La Cumbre Lodge, as well as the Scottish Rite. He and his wife traveled widely in later years around the world; one of his favorite destinations was Asia. He became a photographer and took photos in different places. He transcribed the diaries of his grandfather, Daniel DeBolt Dawson, and presented the transcriptions and the originals to the Beaver County Historical Society for posterity. He completed his memoirs a few years before his death, and enjoyed writing fiction about rural life in the early 20th century. Among his many other achievements were his running accomplishments: ran more than two dozen marathons, and many other races, between the ages of 65 and 80.
