Ron was born on February 5, 1946 in Great Falls, MT to Harry Roland Hanson and Lotus May "Billie" (McGlothlin) Hanson. Ron was one of nine children in the family, having six brothers (Tim, Sam, Tom, William, Duane, Jerry) and two sisters (Colleen [Hanson] Haugland and Cynda [Hanson] Standley).

His father was a carpenter and construction superintendent working statewide including the Governor's Mansion in Helena. While they lived in Helena, his mother worked for Shodair Children's Hospital.

Ron graduated from Helena High in the class of 1965.

He was married several times and is known to have one son, Brian Nathan Hanson, with his wife Janice Elizabeth (Bell) Hanson.

Ron served four tours in Vietnam and received numerous awards.

He died in Grants Pass, Oregon on September 30, 2020.

It is known that he was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, William, Duane and Jerry Hanson.
