Charles Arthur Kelly, 89, died peacefully, August 10, 2021, in Minneapolis, with his daughters and wife at his side. Loyal son of Elizabeth Loftis Kelly and Charles Scott Kelly, of Evanston, he, like his father, studied Law, graduating from Amherst College and Harvard Law School. Receiving a direct commission into the US Air Force in 1957, he later joined the AF Reserves, serving at the Pentagon, and achieved the rank of Brigadier General, before retiring. He was General Partner at Chicago Law Firm: Hubachek, Kelly, Rauch, and Kirby, and later, Managing Partner of the relocated Trust and Estate Department, to Chapman and Cutler.
Charlie was a generous supporter of wilderness conservation. Befriended by Sigurd Olson and Ernest Oberholtzer, he was second president of the Oberholtzer Foundation. He was also engaged in numerous philanthropic activities like Gads Hill for which he served for many years on the Board of Directors.
He is survived by his two daughters: Elizabeth (Jason) Burke, and Mary (Stuart) Ruffin, and son, Timothy (Julee) Barnett, from his first marriage in 1962 to Frances Kates Kelly. He was an exceptional grandfather, introducing his twelve grandchildren who survive him to arts and cultural diversity. He is also survived by his six great-grandchildren; by his sister, Ann; by his three nephews; and by his wife: Jean E. Kelly.
Memorial Service will be held on October 9, 2021 at 11am, at Kenilworth Union Church in Kenilworth, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ernest Oberholtzer Foundation, to Amherst College, to Kenilworth Union Church, to Gads Hill, or to an organization of your choice.
