Dorothy Silva King, 97, of Taunton, passed away on Monday, September 20th, at The Cornerstone Hospice and Palliative Care in The Villages, Florida, surrounded by her children. She was the widow of the late Leo F. King, (d.1996) also of Taunton, to whom she was married for 49 and a half years.
Born in Fall River, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of the late Manuel B. Silva and Mary (Amaral) Silva and moved to Taunton with her parents at the age 11 when her father started the Silva Funeral Home.
Dorothy leaves behind her devoted children and their spouses; Angela K. Riquier and her husband Edward, of The Villages, Florida, and Kenneth S. King and his wife Deborah of Torrance, California. In addition, she leaves behind two grandchildren, Scott Riquier and Hilary King, as well as two great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Andrew Riquier. Additionally, she leaves her brother, William R. Silva of Taunton as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Dorothy attended Taunton High School and graduated in the class of 1941. Following graduation, she attended Bristol County Business School and Boston School of Anatomy and Embalming. Dorothy was a licensed Funeral Director and worked with her father and her brother in the funeral business. Until recently, she co-owned The Silva Funeral Home along with her brother.
She was a member of St. Anthony's parish and over the years was active in her community. She was a member of the Holy Rosary Society, the Sisters of St. Dorothy, and was a charter member of the Taunton Jaycee-ettes. She served on many local boards as well as with the Brownie Scouts (Girl Scouts of America).
Dorothy received the Distinguished Service Award in 1976 from the Taunton Jaycees for her community work which began during WWII with the Red Cross as a volunteer nurse's aide, and a volunteer with their blood bank. She served with the OPA (Office of Price Administration) throughout the war checking local markets and businesses for their price compliance.
In 1986 she was honored by the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children for her 35 years of service. Also, in the 80s, Governor Michael Dukakis appointed her to a 5-year term on the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Embalming and Funeral Directing. She was only the second woman ever appointed to serve.
In addition to her numerous volunteer efforts, she loved spending time with her family. Through the years, she enjoyed knitting, crocheting, reading, and sewing. She also loved to relax in Wells, Maine, spending part of the summers there with her late husband.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, September 27th at 11:00 in St. Anthony Church, School St., with interment to follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Silva Funeral home with visiting hours the morning of the funeral from 8:30am to 10:00am located at 80 Broadway, Taunton. Additional parking with handicap access is located on the North side of the Funeral Home.
