LARRY LELAND MATHENY, son of Roy and Bessie Clark Matheny, was born August 4, 1933, in Shenandoah, Iowa, and departed this life, March 28, 2013, at his home in Lebanon, Missouri, at the age of seventy-nine years. Larry graduated from Shenandoah High School. He then went on to attend college at North West Missouri State in Maryville, Missouri. Larry obtained his Masters in Biology while attending school at Purdue University and obtained a Masters Degree in Administration at University of Illinois. On June 1, 1957, Larry was united in marriage with Gloria Marshall and to this union was born two sons, both surviving. Prior to his passing, Larry and Gloria had celebrated fifty-five years of love and laughter together. Larry dedicated his working life to teaching. He began his career in Lebanon, where he met Gloria. They then went to Suburban Chicago, where Larry spent the duration of his teaching career. He and Gloria returned to the Lebanon community ten years ago. Although Larry finished his career as a teacher, he never retired. He remained very busy. Larry was known as the "Johnny Appleseed of Golf" and traveled setting up caddy programs. He also guided tours of the Everglades. As well as enjoyed the time spent at the condo in Naples. However, his most treasured moments were those spent with his family, they were most important to him. He leaves to celebrate his memory, his wife Gloria; two sons, Tom Matheny and his wife Brenda of Oglesby, IL, and Terry Matheny and his wife Maria of Winter Springs, FL; one sister, Betty Lynn and her husband Jerry of Fredericksburg, VA; two grandsons, Gage and Sean Matheny; one sister-in-law, Helen Siperko of Lebanon, MO; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends. Larry was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Robert Matheny. He was a wonderful husband, father, brother, teacher, mentor and friend. Those who had the pleasure of knowing him will treasure every memory. He will be greatly missed.
