When Elwin Douglas SMITH was born in October 1858 in Lacon, Illinois, his father, John, was 33 and his mother, Susan, was 33. He had siblings George, John Edgar, and Mae (Scott). He married Norma FENN in 1884 in his hometown. They had five children in 12 years. He was a marble cutter and engraver who enjoyed playing the coronet and he was an artist in charcoal and oil. He died of tuberculosis on January 25, 1900, in Pleasantville, New Jersey, at the age of 41, and was buried there.
